Goods and Services That Cannot Be Funded
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides a wide range of supports to help participants achieve their goals.
However, there are certain goods and services that cannot be funded by the NDIS.
Below, we outline 15 categories of items that are not considered NDIS supports.
Note: Under the laws of the NDIS, sexual services, alcohol, and drugs are also explicitly excluded from funding.

Expanding On The Non-NDIS Supports
Day-to-Day Living Costs
Day-to-day living expenses such as rent, utility bills, and groceries are not covered by the NDIS. These are considered general living costs, which everyone is expected to bear regardless of disability.
Accommodation and Household Related
The NDIS does not fund housing-related costs, such as:
- Rent, mortgage repayments, or purchase of land
- Standard home repairs, furniture, and utility bills
- Pools, spas, and related maintenance
Finance and Payments Related
Financial payments that are not related to a participant's disability cannot be funded. This includes:
- Donations, fines, insurance premiums, and legal costs
- Superannuation, fringe benefits, and loan repayments
Food and Groceries
Groceries, fast food, and other food-related expenses are not funded by the NDIS. Participants are expected to cover their own food and household product expenses.
Lifestyle Related
The NDIS does not cover lifestyle expenses, including:
- Cigarettes, alcohol, and gambling
- Internet devices, phones, and data plans
- Costs related to recreational activities and entertainment, such as tickets and memberships
Clothing and Beauty Related Services
Standard clothing and beauty treatments, such as:
- Makeup, cosmetic treatments, and wigs
- Jewellery, watches, and body art
Travel and Transport Related
Travel and transport costs not directly related to a participant's disability support needs are excluded. Examples include:
- Holiday packages, airfare, and passports
- Standard vehicle purchases and registration
Pet Related
The NDIS does not fund costs related to pets or companion animals, including:
- Pet food, grooming, and veterinarian services (excluding NDIS-funded assistance animals)
Reproductive Health and Family Related
Reproductive health services, such as surrogacy and fertility treatments, are not funded by the NDIS.
Alternative and Complementary Therapies
The NDIS does not fund therapies that lack evidence of effectiveness, including:
- Crystal therapy, tarot readings, reflexology, aromatherapy
Wellness and Coaching Related
Services such as life coaching, hypnotherapy, and non-disability related massages are not funded by the NDIS.
Energy and Healing Practices Related
Practices like reiki, frequency healing, and shamanic healing are not covered by the NDIS.
Related to Health
The NDIS does not fund health services, including:
- Pharmaceuticals, diagnostic assessments, and surgical procedures
- Acute, subacute, and emergency health services
Related to Mental Health
Clinical mental health services, such as treatments for addictions and inpatient mental health care, are not funded by the NDIS.
Related to Aged Care
The NDIS does not fund services provided under the Aged Care Act 1997, including:
Daily care fees, personal care, and health practitioner services provided by residential aged care servicesnt-tang.
